Join North Light Fibers and Learn How to Make Yarn - A Tour of the Yarn Studio
Description

In this demonstration you will be taken on a tour of the North Light Fibers dye studio and yarn studio and learn how their artisanal handcrafted yarns are made. The tour starts in the dye studio as Laura creates her own colors and kettle dyes the fibers. Then, Laura and Karyn will tour the yarn studio beginning with picking and carding the fibers where colors and substrates (cashmere, wool, silk, alpaca, etc) are blended. There will be a rich discussion about how blends are created (i.e. Water Street’s 40% cashmere/60% merino) and how the carder works to produce a sliver. We will then take a tour of spinning and discuss draft and twist as well as spin to create the right “single” before we head to plying and finishing. There will be a healthy discussion about balance in yarn and what North Light Fibers does that is very unique to ensure a pleasurable knit and beautiful bloom when the yarn is blocked. Naturally the tour will then end with skeining and finishing as well as a final quality check. We hope you will join us – we are confident that everyone will learn something new and have some fun!
