Sand Art Cowl Demo with Karen Gekelman
Description

Join Karen Gekelman for one hour as she regales us with tales of the ever-feared short row shaping technique, and how it’s really nothing you should fear at all! Karen uses German short rows to create her Sand Art Cowl (featured below) that resemble sand art or geologic strata., a simplistic and user-friendly approach to short row shaping that doesn’t feature any yarnovers or stitch markers, and knits up beautifully (and most of all) QUICK. Bring your needles--you’re not going to want to miss this one.

MATERIALS:

Needle(s): US3 (3.25mm) and/or US4 (3.5mm) and/or US5 (3.75mm) 16” length circular needle(s) If you have available only one of these needle sizes - no problem, go with it.

Yarns: Fingering and mohair (or Suri) yarns will be held together throughout much of this project. You can mix and match the mohair/Suri with various fingering colorways. Choose colorways that are either high contrast or low contrast. I suggest choosing between 3 to 5 colorways in each fingering and mohair. Although, the mohair can be mixed with various fingering colorways to satisfying effects. You will need at least 25yds/23m in each color, more if you want one colorway to dominate throughout the cowl. Optional: If you have extra sport or light DK bits and bobs, add them to mix. These will be knit alone, without holding together with mohair. Incorporating sport or DK yarn will vary the texture and appearance of the fabric.

OR, you may prefer knitting this project in sport/DK yarn. If so, I suggest using a US5 (3.75) and/or US6 (4mm) needle(s).

Scissor

Crochet hook in any small gauge size: 3.25mm, 3.5mm, or 4mm - this used to pick up any dropped stitch
