One of the most common and cleverest of stitch cable patterns is the traditional owl motif! It's fun, quirky and easy to do but if you've never done a cable before it could be a bit intimidating. What's a cable needle? How do you use it? OR Must I even use a cable needle? You already know the basic stitches and would like to move on to something a little more challenging than simple stockinette or garter stitch. Learn the skill of cabling without a cable needle, by knitting the free Ravelry pattern Owl Cowl for Nicole during class. Worsted weight yarn makes this a fairly quick and easy knit.

Supplies needed for the class:

  • 1 skein (approximately 200 yards) of worsted weight yarn (tonal or solid yarns work best, but if you're a fun loving easy spirit go as variegated as you'd like
  • 1 24-inch Size 8 circular needle

Homework for the class:

Get started by working the first 17 rows of Nicole's Owl Cowl OR the Owl Hat pattern. The hat will be quicker to execute during class, (especially if you knit slowly) but you'll get less practice as there are 9 owls in the circumference; the cowl will take longer to execute during class (not if you're a faster knitter) but you will have 14 owls to practice on. You do not have to complete ALL of this prior to class as there will be some time to knit a bit at the beginning of the session while I introduce things. But you will need to have a good start on things or you'll spend class time getting to the fun part - the owls.
