Planned pooling is not exactly a trick. It’s more an illusion, making even the simplest hat or cowl appear effortlessly arty and original. It can look complex, but it’s not. As long as you can cast on and knit, planned pooling is doable. I’ll talk you through a few simple tips. Keeping these in mind, we can explore pooling together. Come on in, the water’s fine! I think being the boss of your pooling feels amazing, and is possible for every level of knitter. It’s a bit like dog training (how you have to remember how much tension to keep on the leash and what a tug or some slack on the leash says to your dog), but walking a dog becomes natural pretty quickly. So will planned pooling. Truly, it’s such fun watching the yarn ‘paint’ the knitting as we glide along, sometimes in beautifully unexpected ways. Ready to dive in?

Supplies

  • The Fiber Seed DK weight yarn in their 'half n half' or 'half speckled' dye styles

  • a pencil and eraser
  • a small safety pin
  • stitch markers
  • a small ball of scrap yarn (any weight yarn from sock to aran weight will do just fine)
  • whatever you will need to wind a skein of yarn (either into a cake with a winder or by hand into a ball)
  • a range of 16" circular needle sizes (interchangeable sets are welcome) based on your goal: Depth Cowl: sizes US 4-8 [3.5-5 mm] or Depth Hat: sizes US 6-10 [4-6 mm]

Homework

  • Your only homework is to not wind your skein(s) of yarn ahead of time. ha, your homework is having no homework!
